GLR Sailor - Impaled by boom to the head

July 2, 2009 · Comment

Well not exactly … but we are having lots of fun this year and the feedback sessions at the end of the day have been very helpful be sure you dont miss them!

This week we are hosting …

GLR Rigging Clinic – Sunday July 5th at 1pm – in the RYC Parking Lot

GLR members Britt Hughes and Andrew Scrivan will be hosting a rigging clinic prior to racing on Sunday July 5th. We will have John Porter from The Boat Locker showing us the absolute latest in Laser rigging. John KNOWS, SPEAKS, SAILS LASERS! We will also cover if time permits: how to prep your boat with the latest and best systems, how do you prep your hull ie: wash it? wax it? sand it with 1600? etc. There are a lot of wild ideas that float around out there! Also we will discuss what sail to purchase, how to sand your blades, are the new English blades worth the outrageous price, should we adopt the new less expensive sail, etc. Clinic begins promptly at 1pm and will conclude at 2pm sharp in the RYC Parking lot. Feedback session after racing at the RYC bar where we can discuss any changes we made to our rigs this week that we found helpful or not.

See you all on Sunday - meantime happy 4th of July to all.

Congratulations to Bill Dicky - GLR’s winner on 6/28!

OGYC Summer Solstice Regatta - Shattuck Rocks!

June 21, 2009 · Comment

We had a great series - 12 competed in 9 races - all with good wind and, believe it or not, no rain.

While Saturday had light air in the 5 knot area, it picked up substantially for Sunday. The last two races caused those center boards to show up on numerous occasions. Even though the windward mark was about 100 yards south of “W”, the waves were kicking up and creating some excitement.

At the end of it all, the first and second place finishers stood apart. Brendan Shattuck and Blake Marrinere had 9 and 14 points respectively. I had a tough time selecting which of Brendan’s 4 second places to throw out. The top five were rounded out by Bill Dickey at third, and Bill Hall and John Coffey 4th and 5th.

Because there were not enough boats to run a radial division, I redirected the awards to the highlight the best women’s results. Today’s stiff breeze made their skill and persistence noteworthy. Megan Marsh was first with Ellen Quinn in second.

You can see the full results here. There were five Ideal 18’s, all from OGYC.

Back onshore, Saturday dinner at OGYC had a total of thirty sailors. After the award ceremony, we had a great view of the storms from the deck coming in from the northwest.

Special thanks to Britt Hughes for being that extra hand and advisor on the race course. And to Karen Varbaro, Tom O’Connell and the OGYC race management team for sound race management work.

Looking forward to next year…

Week 3 - Strange things are happening at Greenwich Laser Racing!!

June 16, 2009 · Comment

The heat is on out on the GLR race course - the turnout is increasing with more and more boats showing up on the line! In fact Britt Hughes - was so pissed off he couldn’t join us on the water this week that he broke his boom in half!!

But seriously - This week was another great week on the water with GLR!! We had a 3 way tie for first place! - We even considered arm wrestling at the bar to declare a winner but decided to apply a more normal scoring process. Also we had some fantastic learning and sharing happening at the Bar after the races as we recap the day over a beer. Click here for the Official Results of the day.

Many more photos of everyone breaking their booms can be found at our Greenwich Laser Racing Flickr site

Greenwich Laser Racing - Week 2 wrap-up

June 8, 2009 · Comment

Week 2 was a great day to be out there sailing a laser with light wind blowing 5-7 knots and increasing the whole day. We did 5 races - 4 of which Andrew Scrivan won and 1 Derek Jackson won.

GLR Week 2 Official Scores

After wards we gathered in the RYC bar for a wrap-up discussion on the day - which was really eye opening. Not only did we have a rules question surrounding rights at an obstruction (in this case the Race Committee boat). But we also gave critical feedback to each other on what we observed others doing and how they could improve. Special thanks to Andrew for leading us in that discussion!

Don’t forget to check out - Photos of week 1 which can be found on the Greenwich Laser Racing Flickr site

Greenwich Laser Racing - off to a great start!!

May 31, 2009 · 1 Comment

WOW what a great day for some laser sailing! Winds were strong with lots of gusts to keep everyone guessing. 12 boats were on the line with many GLR regulars such as Andrew Scrivan, Lawrence McGrath, and Bill Dicky. Plus a nice mix of new folks like Bill Hall, Ellen Quinn and Mark Laser.

There were quite a number of capsizes especially in the last race. But the highlight of the day was Derek Jackson breaking his boom on the upwind leg of the final race. (see photo above) (which is the second time I have seen Derek break a boom)

Official results for Week 1 are posted here and more great photos will be posted to this blog once we have processed all the new applications.

Looking forward to seeing you all next week at the Start Line at 1500
